When Waypoint Church launched 6 months ago (!) the band fired up, Pastor Lawrence preached his inaugural sermon, and we were all stoked to be part of this amazing journey together. I can’t wait to see what God is going to keep doing. In that first sermon, Pastor Lawrence spoke of Phidippides, a man who ran past the normal limits of human endurance not just to carry the news to Athens of a historical defeat of the Persians by the Athenian army, but to warn Athens that another Persian force was coming. The battle was waged on the plains of Marathon, and the famous run cost Phidippides his life. Because of this heroic run, we now have the race we call a "marathon."
Getting the good news of a victory in battle took outstanding measures by this war-trained man. The victorious reign of Jesus, after battling sin and death on our behalf, is the ultimate of all heroic battles. Jesus’ sacrifice also cost His life, shedding His blood for the church so that all nations of the world would be able to hear of His victory in battle. For that, we are all "Phidippides" and have good news to share. We all have our commissioned "marathon" to run the Gospel from Durham to all parts of the globe.
Running a marathon is no joke. I still remember when Titus and I ran a 5K together and the hours of training leading up that day and the victorious feeling we had when we accomplished our goal. The thing is, we needed training. If the church is going to get the good news of Jesus’ victory to the world, we also need training. This February, Waypoint Church is going to train for a "marathon." We aren’t going to run physically (I'm sure some of you are sighing in relief), but we are going to train to “lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:1-2).
The race before us is to see that the Good News of Jesus gets to every tribe, people, language, and nation. With our eyes set on Jesus, we will find the same joy in this task that He found on the cross. Our training will be to prepare ourselves by gaining skills and disciplines that will help us in this task. Therefore Waypoint Church is going to have a training weekend called Missions Marathon: A Weekend of Missional Training. The weekend will offer multiple training modules, which will offer a wide variety of training, all related to the task of reaching the nations with the Gospel.
The weekend is February 20-22, 2015. You can find a basic schedule below with a few details. I have a few surprises planned, so I don’t want to give away all my secrets, but I did want everyone to see the schedule. Don’t feel pressured to attend all the modules, find the one that fits your interests and family schedule, but also feel free to be at all the weekend modules. I believe at Waypoint Church, we are the missionaries to our city...this weekend is designed to equip you to fulfill your missionary calling!
I truly look forward to this weekend of training and would appreciate your prayers leading up to it. See the schedule below for times and descriptions of each module (please note, childcare will be provided at some modules but not all.)
